I walk in wearing a casual outfit and sneakers, and sit down in front of you. I tell you that I’m really struggling to come up with an idea for your birthday present. I throw out several ideas, but you reject them all. While we’re talking, I notice you constantly staring at my shoes. Eventually, just as I was about to give up, I notice you staring at my feet again, and I come up with an idea. "I've figured out exactly what to get you, I'll be right back!" I walk back in wearing one shoe, with the other foot completely bare, and carrying a box. I open the box and show you my shoe inside. "I'm giving you my shoe! But I'm only giving you one, because I want to keep the other. And I'm only going to be wearing this one shoe for the entire upcoming weekend. Happy birthday!”
