Now that Gertie is 18, her pregnant stepmother Gladys feels she needs to take on more responsibilities. Meeting at a diner to talk it over, Gladys lights up a cigarette and discusses it with Gertie.

Gertie seems hesitant to take on more chores, so Gladys strikes a deal with her: help out more around the house, and Gertie can start smoking.

Thrilled at the opportunity, Gertie agrees, and her stepmom helps her light up her very first cigarette. Unlike when Gretchen started smoking or when Annabel started smoking, Gertie takes to smoking instantly, and the two women happily puff away as Gladys rubs her pregnant belly, cigarette in hand. Gertie's even allowed to smoke whenever she wants from now on!
