As she wakes up in bed one morning, 18 year old Gertie suddenly finds herself desperately craving a cigarette. Luckily for her, she's been keeping a pack on her bedside table ever since she started smoking a few days ago.

Once she finds and lights her first morning cigarette, she contemplates how much she enjoys smoking.

As she brushes her teeth (while smoking AND spitting, of course), she realizes that she's been smoking quite a bit lately. It's true that her pregnant stepmother Gladys lets her smoke - and even encourages it - but will she approve of how much Gertie has been smoking?

After breakfast, the pair both sit at the kitchen table. Gertie's stepmother lights her cigarette for her. As she herself puffs on a cigarette while rubbing her pregnant belly, Gladys tells Gertie that she doesn't mind Gertie's been smoking a lot - and she even encourages her to become a chain smoker!
